Stock audit in India:is the inventory really there?

Stock is often a company's largest asset and the hardest to check from abroad. A stock audit physically verifies inventory, tests its valuation and ageing and, for borrowers, checks the stock statements banks rely on. We carry out stock audits for lenders, borrowers and UK groups with inventory in India.

What a stock audit covers.

  • Physical verificationCounting stock on site, by sample or in full, with cut-off checks.
  • Records against physicalReconciling counts with stock ledgers and statements.
  • ValuationCost, net realisable value and the valuation method used.
  • Ageing and conditionSlow-moving, obsolete and damaged items.
  • Ownership and insuranceStock belonging to others, stock with third parties, and insurance cover.

Drawing power for borrowers.

For cash credit facilities, a bank lets a company borrow up to its drawing power: the value of eligible stock and receivables, less a margin. If stock statements overstate the stock, drawing power is overstated too. Our report confirms the eligible values and the correct drawing power.

Simplified drawing power example
Eligible stock at the lower of cost and market value₹2,00,00,000
Less creditors for goods₹40,00,000
Paid stock₹1,60,00,000
Less bank margin of 25%₹40,00,000
Drawing power from stock₹1,20,00,000
