TDS for NRIs.
Fund houses and brokers deduct TDS on gains paid to NRIs: 12.5% on long-term and 20% on short-term equity gains, plus surcharge and cess, and slab-type rates on debt fund gains. Because TDS ignores losses and other adjustments, many NRIs are due a refund. See TDS & Tax Liability India.
